Warrior (2011) Recap
Wow, who would've thought that a movie about a 16 Man MMA Tournament would be so heart warming, so emotional. Just, wow. Warrior is about two brothers who had an alcoholic father (Paddy Conlon) who is now sober and is trying to make amends. As children, the younger brother, Tommy left with his mother and she died. On the other hand, Brendan remained behind to stay with his girlfriend (soon to be wife) and grew up, raised a family and settled down as a High School Physics teacher.
But after some financial troubles, Brendan enters the Sparta tournament. A 16 Man MMA Tournament with the winner adding $5,000,000 to their bank account. However, his brother Tommy also enters and is trained by Paddy who is a former amateur wrestler.
At the tournament, Tommy quickly gets a following as he enters with no music, breezes by his opponents and leaves the cage straight away. His rebellious attitude appealing to the crowd. As well as the reports of his heroic actions in ripping a tank door off it's hinges to rescue some soldiers.
Brendan also has his fair share of action as he needs to win the tournament to be able to pay his house's rent and live with his family casually. Brendan quickly asserts himself as the underdog who will take a beating and still stand up and even forces the Russian Legend Koba, to submit using his amateur wrestling skills to outwrestle him.
Before the finals, it is announced that Tommy was a soldier in the army and went AWOL and was to be arrested after the final. Tommy dominates Brendan in the early goings until a tiny slip up causes Brendan to accidently dislocate Tommy's shoulder. With only one good arm, Tommy is easily defeated as Brendan pleads with him to tap out. After slight hesitation, Tommy taps and the two brothers leave the cage.
Tommy was played by Tom Hardy who solidified himself as the Best Actor today with his badass performance as he destroyed opponents to face Paddy in the finals. Joel Edgerton more than holds his own as the main actor and together they give us the best movie of 2011. I highly recommend this movie as it is a piece of art and truly deserved the Best Picture Award.
